"Heartbreak Beat" - The Psychedelic Furs

But a kiss ain't enough

Here is another classic from Double X. Man that station was the place to be from 1986 until 1988. Hard to believe it was only around for 2 years. "Heartbreak Beat" was The Psychodelic Furs biggest Top 40 radio hit, in the US. The song was the emo love song before emo love songs.

"Firework" - Katy Perry

You don't have to feel like a waste of space, you're original, cannot be replaced

Yeah, I ain't going to apologize for this one, she did a Superbowl halftime show! I don't owe you people any justification!

As I have said previously, a good pop song can stand on it's own merit and that is how I feel about "Firework". The song is catchy, upbeat, delivers a positive message that is pretty much lacking in any other song I put on the tape. And to be perfectly honest with you, this song got me through some hard times.

"Freaks and Geeks" - Childish Gambino

Took the G out yo waffle, all you got left is your ego

Do I actually like Childish Gambino or have I been brainwashed by son into it. The answer lies in this post, because this is by no means one of Xander's favorite songs. So I guess Donald Glover really got that flow. Picking which Gambino track I was going to include on the list was hard. So many good options, so many hot rhymes. With that being said here are:

3 Unfortunate Gambino bars:

  • “You can fucking kiss my ass human centipede”
  • "Are there Asian girls here? Minority Report"
  • "Made the beat then murdered it, Casey Anthony."

"Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - Green Day

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies.

Green Day has been around for awhile and while Dookie may be the album that brough them into the zeitgeist, American Idiot is the absolute peak of their career arc. Published in the aftermath of 9/11 and the middle eastern wars that resulted American Idiot was Green Days attempt at a punk rock opera to capture the feelings of what they believed America had become, a pipeline to build a Walmart on every street corner of the world.

"Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams" are the two songs at the heart of this story. "Holiday" is about how the American dream has failed the youth and "Boulevard" is about how the youth has failed each other. Green Day later turned American Idiot into a stage musical, with songs of this quality it probally wasn't hard.
